Kyle Breen helps Siena College's Enactus Team win regional championship

2013 Apr 9

The Siena College Enactus team was named a Regional Champion at the Enactus United States Regional Competition held on April 3 in New York City. The event was one of ten regional competitions around the country held this spring.

The five Siena students honored were Challen Banach '13, Kyle Breen '13, Mary Hartwick '15, Matthew Hemsley '14 and Elizabeth Schlegel '13, along with team advisor Deborah Kelly, J.D., associate professor of management.

Kyle Breen is a Marketing major from Rensselaer, N.Y..

The team, formerly known as Students for Free Enterprise (SIFE), organized ten projects in the Capital Region during the 2012-2013 academic year, including the Ninth Annual "Taking Sides" Ethics Debate last September and the Sixth Annual Entrepreneurship Expo in March. They had 17 minutes to convince the the panel of 12 judges that they developed community outreach projects, transformed lives and shaped a better, more sustainable world.

"The nice part was that, as a team, we worked very well together, which is something that is stressed heavily in almost every business class offered at Siena," said Breen. "The business department places a big emphasis on being able to work with individuals to achieve specific goals, just as people experience everyday in the real world."

Siena College is one of more than 500 enactus programs in the United States. As a regional champion, they advance to the 2013 Enactus U.S. National Exposition, to be held May 21-23 in Kansas City, Mo.

"Their many hours of hard work paid off," said Kelly. "I'm very proud of this group and we can't wait to get to Missouri!"
